SYMPOSIUM SUR LA COOPERATION SUD-SUD ET TRIANGULAIRE

The OACPS Information Centre on South-South and Triangular Cooperation (OACPS- SSTC), organized on September 3, 2021, in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, its first symposium on the theme: « Expanded partnership as a means to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals ».

The Symposium’s main objectives were to take stock of the progress made by the OACPS and its partners in the area of South-South and Triangular Cooperation and to reflect on strategic interventions of the new OACPS-SSTC Centre in Malabo; in fulfillment of its mission to promote, coordinate and facilitate South-South and Triangular Cooperation in the OACPS member states.

The event was held under the high patronage of the President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, HE Obiang NGUEMA MBASOGO, and mobilized an important number of eminent personalities from the government of Equatorial Guinea. The OACPS Secretary General, ambassadors and representatives of international organizations accredited in Malabo. Representatives of the private sector and the civil society, as well as members of the international cooperation also took part of this symposium.

The Symposium’s proceedings consisted of different sessions, including the opening ceremonies; thematic presentations followed by interactive discussions; and the closing session, which included a synthesis of key takeaway messages and recommendations of the Symposium.

The Opening Session was marked by welcoming remarks of the Director of the OACPS Centre for South-South and Triangular Cooperation, Mr. Patrice NIYONGABO; the address by the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps accredited in Malabo, H.E. Seikhou Amadou Tiany DOUMBOUYA; the address by the Secretary General of the OACPS, HE George Rebelo Pinto Chikoti and the opening speech by HE Obiang NGUEMA MBASOGO, President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea.

In his address, the Secretary General of the OACPS, HE Georges Rebelo Pinto Chikoti, thanked His Excellency President Obiang, for his leadership and commitment to strengthening South-South and Triangular Cooperation; as well as the remarkable support of his Government to the OACPS Information Centre on South-South and Triangular Cooperation.

Secretary General Chikoti went on to state that the OACPS Centre on South-South and Triangular Cooperation, as a platform for sharing knowledge, experiences, good practices, and technology transfer, will be an important lever to OACPS in promoting and facilitating South-South and South-North Cooperation, developing and diversifying partnerships with the countries in the global South and other nations and organizations.

The key moment of the Symposium’s was the opening speech by HE President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. The President thanked all the OACPS member states for the confidence they have placed in his country by unanimously deciding to establish the OACPS Centre on South-South and Triangular Cooperation Headquarters in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.  He renewed his commitment and that of his government to supporting the operations of centre, which has to be “the facilitator of exchanges between the OACPS States and those of the Global South in general, to advance towards economic and social transformation, through the promotion and exchange of scientific knowledge, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship”.

After the opening ceremony, the symposium participants were able to follow three (3) presentations on various dimensions of South-South and triangular cooperation. The first presentation highlighting the comparative advantages of the OACPS in South-South and Triangular Cooperation and the expected role of the new OACPS-SSTC Centre served as an introduction to the symposium. It clearly demonstrated the enormous potential of the OACPS, through its centre, to become a leading global player in promoting and facilitating South-South and Triangular Cooperation initiatives.  The two other presentations were specific in the nature and focused on :

(i) The role of regional and interregional integration in strengthening South-South and triangular cooperation and

(ii) Covax initiative as a case study of partnership and South-South and Triangular Cooperation.
